In addition to the180 public schools in the above
districts, Tucson has more than 40 private schools. Tuition for
private schools ranges from $1,000 to $20,000 per year.
Arizona leads the nation in total number of charter
schools. These "alternative" schools are actually public schools
(no tuition) under "charter" from a group of parents,
teachers, a business or other public agency that wants to create
alternatives and choice in education. Sometimes controversial,
charter schools may offer anywhere from far superior to below
average educational opportunities.
Higher Education
The University
of Arizona
is one of the top-20 research universities in the country with
an enrollment of 35,000-plus and covering 347 acres. It offers
degrees in 131 undergraduate, 137 masters, 95 doctoral, three
professional and five specialist programs. It boasts University
Medical Center, a leading research and teaching hospital. The
University is first in the country in astronomy, optical sciences
and applied mathematics A number of degrees can be obtained through
the university's evening and weekend program.
Pima Community College
is the nation's fifth-largest multicampus community college. Pima
offers five associate degrees in more than 60 fields of study
plus university transfer programs, career-oriented certificates
and a multitude of noncredit classes
Several schools for career training and just plain
self-improvement are in Tucson. Popular programs include high-tech,
health care, and commercial art & design.
